Health, finances and other divorce concerns for older adults

National statistical trends show that more and more New Jersey spouses who are 50 and older are getting divorced. Unfortunately, the stresses that accompany the end of a marriage can have major effects on seniors. For example, chronic stress can cause insomnia, depression and anxiety. It may even lead to conditions such as Parkinson's disease, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Older divorced adults are often more isolated, which can also contribute to poor health. Men are more likely to succumb to social isolation because many depend on their wives to maintain relationships. On the other hand, older ex-wives are more likely to struggle financially after divorce.

There are positive elements to divorce for some older people. After all, toxic relationships can also be bad for a person's health. Following a divorce, people should make a point of getting out of the house and exercising regularly. A pet may provide companionship.

It's important to note that stress can lead to risky behavior, such as drinking too much. To avoid this, one may want to look into new social outlets such as joining clubs. Physical symptoms should be checked out by a doctor since they could indicate a condition that can be treated. If necessary, one can visit a counselor for emotional support.

While older adults are less likely to have minor children that they need to make custody decisions about, they often have to consider the importance of asset division during divorce. Instead of going into a more adversarial situation in the courtroom, they might be able to reach an amicable divorce agreement through negotiation. Attorneys can help with this process. People should think about the practical aspects of what they want and need after a divorce.
