How can you make transfer days easier for your children?

On Behalf of | Jul 6, 2025 | Child Custody

Learning how to live between two homes is a challenging life change for children. One of the most challenging things for them to deal with is transition days. This is the day when they move from one parent’s home to the other.

Even if they don’t show it, this is likely an emotionally charged day for the kids. They may feel sad that they’re leaving one home, but joyful that they’re getting to go to the other home. They may also feel a bit nervous about the point when they actually made the switch. As the child’s parents, there are things you can do that might make this day easier for them.

Prepare the children for the day

Children need consistency and stability, so they may fare better if they have a countdown to when they will switch homes. Older children may be able to do this on their own, but younger children may need assistance from their parents. Be sure to let them know if there are changes to the normal schedule as soon as you find out, so they can prepare for those.

Keep things calm

Transition days aren’t a good time to discuss contentious matters with your ex. Instead, leave this time as a stress-free period where the focus can be on the children. This can prevent the children from having to worry about their parents fighting during the transition time.

Give the children time to adjust

When the children are coming to your house, be sure to give them time to adjust once they get there. Having a night to acclimate to the change can be beneficial. This doesn’t mean that you have to leave them alone that entire time. Instead, you may decide that you’re going to have a night at home with movies and a pizza.

The terms of transition days should be included in the parenting plan so both parents know what to do. This must be set up in the children’s best interests. Working with someone familiar with these matters may make it easier to establish the plan.
