Have you planned for exchange days?

On Behalf of | Dec 5, 2024 | Child Custody

When drafting a parenting plan, some parents usually forget to prepare for exchange days — the days they have to transition their children from one household to the other. It’s not uncommon for co-parents to have misunderstandings during these days, a factor that can negatively impact their co-parenting.

Here is how you and your co-parent can prepare for exchange days:

Choose a location

You and your co-parent should choose a location to drop off or pick up your child. If you are comfortable going to each other’s houses, you can use them for exchange. Otherwise, it can help to choose a neutral place. If you have concerns about potential arguments, a public spot can be suitable.

Regardless of the location you and your co-parent choose, ensure your child feels comfortable to be there. They should be able to play while waiting. Further, pick a location convenient for both of you, especially when it comes to proximity to your home or work.

Agree on time

It’s vital to agree on the exact time you will be exchanging your child. Both of you can drive to the designated location early to avoid delays. If the exchange location is your home, your child should be ready by the agreed time. It can be unfair for a parent to wait for a long time at the exchange location. If you are going to be late, notify the other parent soon so they can plan their drive accordingly.

Plan for changes

You may be unable to pick up or drop off your child on the scheduled day or time due to various factors. Thus, you and your co-parent should discuss this in advance. How long does each parent have to reschedule an exchange? How should such an emergency be communicated? and so on.
