Is it right to stay married for your children?

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2024 | Divorce

If you float the idea of a divorce to friends or family, some of them might tell you to “think of your children.” Some people believe that couples should stay together at any cost – at least until their kids reach a certain age.

While divorcing will be difficult for your kids, staying together might be even worse for them as well as you.

Violence

One example is where there is violence (physical or emotional) in the relationship. If you continue to put up with it, your children may take that as an example for their lives. They may believe that abuse is just part of being married. Not ending the marriage could also have grave consequences for your health and perhaps that of your children, too.

Unhappiness has a cost

You have a much better chance of reaching your full potential out of a bad marriage than in one. Unhappiness can affect your work as well as so many other aspects of your life.

Only you can make the call

It is OK to seek advice from others, but you are the one who has to decide whether to divorce or try and keep the marriage together. Some couples do come back from the brink of divorce and go on to have a better marriage that lasts for years. Yet in most cases, when one or both parties are considering a divorce, there is no turning back.

You can make the divorce easier on your children

Taking steps to reduce the divorce’s impact on your children is crucial. Learning more about your options could be the first step to a brighter future for you and your kids.
